Checkups & cleanings in Billerica
The least dramatic appointment we offer, and by a wide margin the most valuable one.
What a checkup is actually for
The cleaning is the part people remember, but the examination is the part that saves you money. Nearly every expensive thing that happens in a dental office — the root canal, the crown, the extraction — began as something small and painless that was visible months or years earlier.
A cavity caught at the right moment is a filling. The same cavity found when it starts to hurt is often a root canal and a crown, at several times the cost. That gap is the entire argument for coming twice a year.
What happens at a visit
A proper cleaning
Removing plaque and the hardened tartar that brushing can’t shift, then polishing. Where the gums need it, we clean carefully below the gumline.
Examination
Every tooth checked for decay, cracks, wear, and failing older fillings, along with your bite and existing restorations.
Digital x-rays
Taken when they’re needed, not routinely. They show decay between teeth and problems at the root that can’t be seen by eye.
Gum measurements
Charting pocket depths so changes are caught while they’re still reversible.
Oral cancer screening
A check of the soft tissues, tongue, and throat. Quick, and occasionally the most important thing we do all day.
A plain conversation
What we found, what needs doing, what can wait, and what it will cost. In that order.
How often should you come?
Every six months suits most people. Some need three- or four-month intervals — usually anyone with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, diabetes, or who smokes. A few very low-risk patients can reasonably stretch to once a year.
We’ll tell you which you are and why. It’s a clinical judgment about your mouth, not a default setting.
Been a long time?
If it’s been five years, or fifteen, you are not going to get a lecture here. People stop coming for all sorts of reasons — cost, a bad experience somewhere else, life simply getting in the way — and it happens far more often than you’d think.
We’ll look, tell you honestly where things stand, and work out a plan you can actually afford. Starting is the hard part, and it’s the only part we need from you.
Common questions
How often do I need a cleaning?
Every six months for most people. More often if you have a history of gum disease, build tartar quickly, smoke, or have diabetes.
Do I need x-rays every visit?
No. We take them based on your risk and history — typically bitewings every one to two years for an adult with healthy teeth, more often if there's active decay.
Does a cleaning hurt?
It shouldn't. Sensitivity is more common if there's inflammation or if it's been a long time between visits. Tell your hygienist and they'll adjust.
Does insurance cover checkups?
Most dental plans cover two preventive visits a year at or near 100%. We'll check your specific plan and tell you before your visit.
