Why professional whitening works better
Drugstore strips and whitening toothpastes use weak concentrations and a one-size delivery. They lift surface stain and not much else, and because the strip doesn’t fit your teeth, the result is often patchy along the edges.
Professional whitening uses a stronger gel and, in the take-home version, a tray moulded to your teeth so the gel sits evenly against every surface and off your gums. That’s the difference between a shade or two and a genuinely noticeable change.
It also starts with an exam. Whitening an untreated cavity or a tooth with an exposed root is painful and a waste — and stains from inside a tooth won’t bleach at all, which is worth knowing before you spend money on it.
Two ways to do it
In office
A single appointment with a stronger gel and a protective barrier on the gums. You’ll see the difference the same day — the usual choice when there’s a wedding, a reunion, or a photograph on the calendar.
Custom take-home trays
Trays made from impressions of your teeth, plus professional gel, used a short stretch each day for a couple of weeks. Slower, gentler on sensitivity, and you keep the trays to touch up later for the price of a syringe of gel.
What whitening won’t change
Whitening works on natural enamel. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers, bonding, or fillings — so if you have a white filling on a front tooth, whitening the teeth around it can leave it standing out. When that’s likely, we’ll plan the order properly: whiten first, then match the restoration to the new shade.
Grey discoloration from inside a tooth — old trauma, or certain antibiotics taken in childhood — responds poorly. Veneers or bonding are the honest answer there.
Common questions
How long do the results last?
Typically one to three years, depending mostly on coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking. Keeping your trays means a touch-up is cheap and easy.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Some sensitivity during treatment is common and temporary. Take-home trays used over a longer stretch tend to cause less of it, and we can supply a desensitising gel.
Is whitening bad for enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations doesn't damage enamel. The risk with unsupervised products is overuse and gum irritation from poorly fitting trays.
Can I whiten if I have crowns or veneers?
You can whiten your natural teeth, but the restorations won't change color. We'll talk through the sequence so everything ends up matching.
